Italy–Pakistan Archaeology Mission in Swat (1955–2025)
Italy–Pakistan Archaeology Mission in Swat (1955–2025) For more than seven decades, the Government of Italy has been a steadfast partner of the Directorate General of Archaeology & Museums, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in safeguarding the cultural treasures of the Swat Valley. This long-standing collaboration has contributed significantly to the conservation and restoration of some of the region’s most important archaeological and religious heritage sites, including sacred Buddhist monuments and historic Islamic landmarks. With an investment of €2.4 million, the partnership has gone beyond physical restoration—it has focused on building local capacity by training skilled workers and professionals in modern conservation techniques. This has ensured that the people of Swat are not only custodians of their heritage but also active participants in its preservation. One of the most remarkable outcomes of this cooperation is the establishment of the most advanced museum infrastructure in the region, designed to preserve and display invaluable artifacts while serving as an educational and cultural hub for both local communities and international visitors. Through this enduring partnership, the Swat Valley stands today as a testament to shared efforts in protecting and promoting cultural heritage for future generations.
